It is a body working extraordinarily hard — and it deserves care that honors exactly that. FUNCTIONAL ONCOLOGY™ offers oncology-informed facial and bodywork experiences for those navigating cancer at every stage, from active treatment through remission and long-term recovery. Every session is adapted in real time to your treatment phase, medical history, physical capacity, and what your body is ready to receive that day.
All FUNCTIONAL ONCOLOGY™ sessions require written medical clearance from your oncologist or primary care provider prior to booking, and are designed in full collaboration with your healthcare team. THE LIVING reserves the right to modify, postpone, or decline treatment based on current health status, treatment phase, or contraindications.
There is no predetermined protocol here. No expectation of what the session will look like. Every decision — every modality, every pressure, every movement — is made in real time, in direct response to your body’s communication in that moment.
For those in active treatment, the body is in a state of profound physiological demand. Chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and surgical recovery each create their own unique landscape of need — fatigue, neuropathy, lymphedema risk, compromised immunity, nervous system dysregulation, emotional exhaustion, skin sensitivity, and tissue changes that require an entirely different quality of touch than a body not in treatment.
This session may include gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage to support fluid movement, reduce swelling, ease inflammatory burden, and move treatment byproducts through the body’s natural elimination pathways. It may include light therapeutic touch to ease muscular holding, support circulation, and bring a sense of physical ease to a body that has been pushed beyond its ordinary limits. It may include nervous system regulation to guide the body — even briefly — into the parasympathetic rest and restore state where healing, immune function, and emotional settling can occur.
Or it may simply be the quietest, most present, most intentional touch your body has received since treatment began.
Treatment-compromised skin carries its own language. It is often dry, reactive, sensitized, thinned, or depleted in ways that standard skincare cannot address — and may even worsen. This session begins by listening to what the skin is communicating and responding only with what it can receive.
Gentle facial Manual Lymphatic Drainage is performed using the lightest possible technique — moving at the pace of the lymphatic system itself, never against it. This supports the body’s ability to move treatment byproducts, reduce facial puffiness and fluid retention, calm inflammatory signaling, and bring a sense of lightness and ease to a face that has been carrying the weight of treatment.
Treatment-adapted skincare from The Living Collection™ — selected specifically for compromised, sensitized, and immunosuppressed skin — is applied with deep intention: whole-plant, fragrance-free, barrier-supportive formulations that hydrate, soothe, and protect without burdening a system that is already working at capacity.
Gentle nervous system regulation techniques are woven throughout — helping the body shift, even briefly, out of the chronic sympathetic activation of treatment and into the parasympathetic rest that allows cellular repair and emotional settling to occur.
The body in remission is not the same body that entered treatment. It has been changed — by the treatment itself, by the prolonged stress of illness, by surgical intervention, by the months or years of holding on. Muscles may be tight and deconditioned. Fascia may be restricted. The nervous system may still be running on the emergency frequency of survival. The body may feel unfamiliar, distant, or difficult to inhabit.
This session is devoted to the slow, patient, intelligent work of helping the body remember itself. Drawing from the full range of THE LIVING’s therapeutic bodywork modalities — except for Manual Lymphatic Drainage, which is addressed separately in the IN REMISSION Facial Experience — each session is shaped entirely by what the body is ready to receive. Therapeutic massage, connective tissue work, somatic bodywork, nervous system regulation, and structural restoration are introduced and progressed as the body’s capacity rebuilds — always gently, always in conversation with your recovery timeline and your oncologist’s guidance.
Over time — session by session, month by month — the body begins to release what it has been holding. Movement returns. Ease returns. The nervous system begins to exhale. And the body, slowly, begins to feel like home again.
Treatment leaves a lasting imprint on the skin — dehydration, barrier compromise, sensitivity, dullness, pigmentation changes, and a lymphatic system that is slowly relearning how to flow. This session honors that recovery timeline with precision and patience, meeting the skin exactly where it is and guiding it gently forward.
Each session begins with gentle facial Manual Lymphatic Drainage — reawakening lymphatic pathways that have been suppressed or altered by treatment, supporting the movement of residual treatment byproducts, reducing facial congestion and puffiness, and beginning to restore the natural circulation that gives skin its vitality and glow.
Functional facial support is then layered in as the skin’s capacity allows — gentle exfoliation to begin clearing the cellular debris of treatment, therapeutic masking to replenish hydration and support barrier restoration, and sculpting facial massage to reawaken circulation, restore tone, and begin rebuilding the architecture that treatment may have softened or depleted.
Skincare restoration using The Living Collection™ whole-plant formulations is chosen in direct response to the skin’s current state — nourishing, rebuilding, and protecting a system that is gradually finding its way back to health.
Nervous system regulation is woven throughout — supporting the long and nonlinear transition from a body in survival mode to a body that is learning, slowly, to feel safe again.
